How can emerging technology keep Victorians safe at work?

WorkSafe Victoria

Our workplaces and industries are changing rapidly.

New risks and hazards are emerging and community expectations are shifting.

WorkSafe has recognised the need to transform the way we do things in response to these changes to stay in ahead of the curve in keeping Victorians healthy and safe.

WorkSafe is interested in exploring how emerging technologies can assist in the prevention of workplace injuries, including physical and mental injuries.

Be it to support high-risk industries like agriculture and manufacturing or to enhance the activities of WorkSafe inspectors, startup creativity could play a crucial role in keeping Victorians healthy and safe.

Why we are focused on this?

WorkSafe Victoria plays a critical role in the lives of Victorian employers and workers - as the state’s health and safety regulator and as the manager of Victoria’s workers compensation scheme.

WorkSafe is focused on this challenge to:

• stay ahead of future workforce trends, so we can ensure we are working safely in new and emerging industries whilst optimising safety in the current state of play
• remain aligned to our strategic objectives of being customer-centric and prevention led WorkSafe 2030 Strategy
• provide our workforce with tools and resources to do their job more effectively
• save lives and keep Victorians safe at work

What are we looking for in a solution?

WorkSafe is looking for a solution which creates positive behaviours and workplace cultures helping to inspire action to decrease injuries and increase health and safety awareness in workplaces.

WorkSafe is also looking for a solution that complements internal capabilities to better support the Victorian community.

The solution will need to be implementable within current business operations, either supporting our current prevention strategies or creating the benchmark for emerging best practice.

What assets are available to help co-design a solution?

WorkSafe is moving toward a more client-focused and prevention-led approach. The selected startup will:
• Work in partnership with WorkSafe’s Innovation Centre to test new ideas, products and services
• Have access to WorkSafe’s data and analytics team
• Be able to engage with key stakeholders (internally and externally) with prior arrangement

Who are our end users?

• Workers in all industries
• Employers in high risk industries
• WorkSafe Inspectors (monitor and enforce health and safety laws in workplaces)
• WorkSafe Prevention program managers (design and run programs to prevent incidents and harm)

What is the opportunity for the successful startup?

In the near term during the program, this challenge would have up to $185,000 in funding which includes:

• $5,000 for the Pre-accelerator Stage to fine tune your proposal
• $30,000 for the Acceleration Stage to develop an MVP
• $150,000 for the contract during the Implementation Stage to fully develop and deliver the solution

The reach of the solution will be broad. The solution will have positive impact, influence and benefits for workforces and whole communities.

The solution will be relevant to other regulators across Victoria as well as regulators in other jurisdictions.
